{"id":121,"date":"2013-02-02T12:40:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T20:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arcturusretreat.ca\/wordp\/?p=121"},"modified":"2013-05-25T21:22:49","modified_gmt":"2013-05-26T04:22:49","slug":"snowshoe-adventure-february-1-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcturusretreat.ca\/wordp\/snowshoe-adventure-february-1-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Snowshoe Adventure &#8211; February 1, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>You know how sometimes you just want to be out on your own with time to think? \u00a0Today was one of those days. \u00a0With the promise of sun, I grabbed my snowshoes and caught the <a href=\"http:\/\/outdooradventurestore.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alpha Adventures<\/a> shuttle to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scrd.ca\/Dakota-Ridge\" target=\"_blank\">Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation Area<\/a>.<\/div>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-eUiBQVwO50k\/UQ1jzEgp-MI\/AAAAAAAAAtk\/ltpgnlunXHI\/s1600\/Dakota+241.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-eUiBQVwO50k\/UQ1jzEgp-MI\/AAAAAAAAAtk\/ltpgnlunXHI\/s320\/Dakota+241.jpg\" width=\"257\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Eagle Lookout Trail<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Even though I arrived at Dakota Ridge with 15 other people in the shuttle and there were quite a few skiers near the parking lot and the warming hut, I had the trails to myself. \u00a0All the trails are now signed and have been well marked, so after of couple of times of hiking with other people I have no problem venturing out on my own. \u00a0I take care, one could easily get lost in the white snowy forest if you left the trails, to ensure I stay on the marked trails&#8230;letting the alone time be adventure in itself. \u00a0I hiked the almost 2km Eagle Lookout trail without seeing another soul.<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-KiyR7fIsAI0\/UQ1jzd4QaQI\/AAAAAAAAAto\/9gabGs_feiI\/s1600\/Dakota+243.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-KiyR7fIsAI0\/UQ1jzd4QaQI\/AAAAAAAAAto\/9gabGs_feiI\/s320\/Dakota+243.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>just me and the forest<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Dakota Ridge had a ton of snow in December. The base was up to almost 3 meters. When we were there on Boxing Day, all the trees looked like white Dr Seuss candy canes. \u00a0Today the trees were green as we&#8217;ve had warmer temperatures lately that have melted some of the snow. \u00a0The snowshoe trails are obvious with hard tracks to follow. \u00a0Fresh snow in this week&#8217;s forecast should cover that up with fresh powder.<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-IthL3cXO1qM\/UQ1j0p-_jXI\/AAAAAAAAAt0\/t8Vp5_IwZ0Q\/s1600\/Dakota+244.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-IthL3cXO1qM\/UQ1j0p-_jXI\/AAAAAAAAAt0\/t8Vp5_IwZ0Q\/s320\/Dakota+244.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Map along the trail<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>After a short snack break outside the warming hut, I headed out on the Balsam Loop. This is another green trail just over 2km long that starts and ends at the warming hut. \u00a0The first half of the trail meanders through the forest, but there is a point where you come over a hill and into a clearing where on a sunny day there are just amazing views. Today the sun was playing peekaboo most of the day. There were touches of blue sky and warm sun, but clouds kept hanging in.
